A true Werewolf speaks...
Good day.
I am Michael; here with you at Dream Teller's request. I have to say I am somewhat surprised at the amount of interest many of you have expressed in Werewolves. But I am not surprised at how little most of you know about them. I will attempt to clarify some misconceptions concerning my Kind. Yes, I am Werewolf; born, not made, so I can speak with authority.
The first myth I will shatter is this: Born Werewolves don't endure bone-crunching, painful change from human to wolf. The change is swift and smooth, so swift it is difficult for the ordinary human eye to detect. Many of the 'tales' you read would have you believe that the pain is punishment for what we are. If that were the case there would be a great many angry wolves on the prowl. Thankfully, such is not the case. We are not the spawn of the devil nor do we have a terrible disease, as many tales would have you believe, but a breed apart from your own. Our genetics are what determine our species.
Myth #2: In our human form we are a ragtag band of gypsies who skulk in the woods away from other societies. (If you ever run upon a Were skulking in the woods you best believe you have more than likely come upon a rogue who cares nothing for human life.) As for ragtag, I assure you that, too, is a misconception. But allow me to add this before I continue: There are those of my Kind (myself included) who much prefer life in the forests to life in town or city. That is a natural preference given that down through time, forests and woods were the safest place for our Kind. Too, we are naturalists by nature; do not take well to confinement; and need the earth beneath our feet and the trees around us. And back to the topic of how we look. If you passed me or my kin on the street, you would not know us from others of your Kind. Our 'gifts' enable us to do well in life and we are well educated, well dressed, and, for the most part, well mannered.
But for all of that, Werewolves continue to be painted as savage beasts intent on nothing more than killing Human Kind. We are not mindless beasts in our wolf form. Our humanity melds with the animal such that we possess a higher intelligence than ordinary people and wolves. We see more clearly, hear more acutely, and perceive what goes on around us with a greater sense of perception while in either form.
Those beasts of whom you read are mostly fictional, although there is some truth in regards to the rogues of our Kind. There are reasons why one turns rogue; none I would condone, but clearly those need to be known. Many of the rogues in the distant past were Werewolves discovered by reigning Monarchs. They allowed themselves to be bought and used against the enemy. In those days they had little education, as was the case with most outside of the King's fancy, and often they were overpowered by the very army they fought beside and chained until there was further use for them. Some were beaten unmercifully; others, destroyed. Those who survived found escape and became savage beasts intent upon the destruction of their deceivers. The beast can certainly overpower one's humanity, if allowed to.
In more recent times, our Kind has been the butt of many jokes by non-believers, was hunted and destroyed to near extinction by self-proclaimed Were hunters, and it is just in the last half-century that our numbers are coming back. We are smarter, more wily, and less self-indulgent than our forefathers and that due to evolution of time. As with any species, change is neccessary to keep abreast of modern society. So, like other Kinds, many of us live, work, and socialize among you; Outsiders.
It was long thought that Werewolves were Immortals but that is not the case. We are long-lived, well beyond ordinary human years, but eventually we age, as the rest of Human-Kind, just at a much slower pace. We perpetuate our Kind; love our cubs to distraction, and work hard to help them find their place in society. Some of us are privileged to amass wealth but we prefer to stay out of the limelight, for the need to protect our identities is instinctive.
Another myth is that Werewolves are unable to control the change when the full moon is upon us. There is truth in that as it relates to the cub who reaches the age of first change; as a teenager. It is the inherant responsibility of the parents to teach the child how to accept, and behave according to our laws. Others of our Kind lend a helping hand, for all our offspring are important and neccessary to the survival of our Kind.
Yet another myth is that only the males of our Kind are true Werewolves but there is no truth in that. Both sexes have dual natures and both undergo the change. While most of us prefer to mate with our own Kind, there are those who find a mate of the Human variety. That in no way weakens the bloodline but it does seem to temper the animal nature, somewhat. Those Weres of mixed parentage are more likely to enjoy the best of both worlds, if the Human mate is accepting of our Kind. Some attempt to accept and fail, others manage it quite well. Mating with one's own Kind is most desirable. Weres mate for life and if something happens to one, the other will live out life, alone. So it is preferable to mate with like Kind, since Humans age and die quicker than Weres.
As to the belief that the change is painful; that does apply to the made Werewolf, but only during the first few changes. It requires time for the body and the genetics to shift from one nature to two. And there is danger involved in turning a Human. Some are unable to adjust and become crazed predators, others use it to unworthy advantage and those must be put down for the good of our Kind and of those victims upon which they would prey. (Those types are the ones around which most of myth is based).
There is much more to the life of the Werewolf but I will stop here and save the rest for a later date. I have given you the basics to mull over and if the interest continues, I will be happy to get into the deeper aspects. Michael
